RSK2 is a member of the family of 90-kDa ribosomal S6 kinases. These proteins are a class of serine/threonine kinases that are activated in response to various extracellular signals, including growth factors, polypeptide hormones and neurotransmitters. RSK2 phosphorylates a wide range of substrates, including ribosomal protein S6, and plays a significant role in mediating extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK) signal transduction. Mutations in RSK2 have been found to be associated with Coffin-Lowry syndrome.
